Pickling
The pickling process consists of suppressing the film of metallic oxides adhered to the steel surface (scale).
Theoretically, when the oxidised metal is introduced into a
watery
solution of an inorganic acid, the acid penetrates the cracks and pores of the layer
of scale.
The pickling process can also be carried out with hydrochloric acid. When steel is pickled in a watery solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl), the acid dissolves the scale and a small part of the base metal.
