Green Steel

Gonvarri’s Positioning

We seek to support our partners to accelerate their decarbonization transformation and make their sustainability progress visible.

What is so-called Green Steel?

Green steel is steel produced using methods that significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional steel production, often incorporating renewable energy sources and innovative technologies.

What technologies are required?

Sustainable methods include the use of natural gas in the first instance and hydrogen thereafter instead of coal in the reduction process, electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy, recycling of steel scrap, and carbon capture and storage technologies.

How does green steel contribute to sustainability?

It reduces the carbon footprint of steel production, minimizes environmental pollution and promotes recycling.

Carbon neutral

For Gonvarri Industries, being a low-carbon company implies being part of an important commitment to climate change, assuming a series of actions that promote and contribute to mitigating our impact. We have therefore defined and approved the ‘Carbon Neutral Plan 2030/50’ and incorporated it into the company’s decision-making, business strategy, management and performance.

Our 2030 target, across all geographies and markets, is to:

Reduce emissions associated with fossil fuel consumption by 50% (base year 2022).
100% of the electricity consumed by the company to come from renewable sources.

Consult annually, through our public information reports, the monitoring of the evolution of the Carbon Neutral Plan.

  • 14% reduction in Scope 1 emissions in 2025 compared to the 2022 base year (BY)
  • 61% of electricity consumed sourced from renewable energy

Energy consumption from renewable sources

The Carbon Neutral 2030/2050 Plan sets a target of 2 = 0 emissions by 2030. This target refers to emissions from energy purchased by the company, i.e. electricity and steam/heat. At the end of 2025, electricity consumption is 61% from renewable sources.

CO2 emissions

The strong value that Gonvarri places on its commitment to sustainability and the environment means that the company is constantly seeking and investing in the most efficient solutions and technologies for its processes that will enable it to reduce its energy consumption and CO2 emissions as much as possible.

Waste management

In 2025, Gonvarri Industries generated approximately 365 kt of non‑hazardous waste derived from its industrial activities. Metal scrap represents the main waste stream, accounting for around 96% of the total, while the remaining 4% corresponds to packaging waste (wood, cardboard and plastic), organic waste, construction and demolition waste, and other auxiliary process materials.
In line with the Group’s circular economy approach, waste management is primarily focused on recovery and recycling. Accordingly, 93% of the non‑hazardous waste generated in 2025 was sent for recycling, mainly consisting of steel, aluminium, wood, paper, recyclable plastics and mineral materials. The remaining waste was managed through transfer centres or controlled disposal, with landfill use remaining limited and not material.

Waste management

This performance reflects Gonvarri Industries’ commitment to optimising resource use, reducing the environmental impact associated with waste generation, and progressively aligning with circular economy principles, in line with its strategic framework and the evolving regulatory and market context.

We prioritize people

In 2025, Gonvarri Industries continued to develop social action initiatives and community engagement activities in the territories where it operates, in line with its sustainability model and shared value creation approach. These actions are primarily aimed at generating positive social impact, strengthening local cohesion and contributing to socio‑economic development.

The Group’s social action is structured around two main pillars. On the one hand, the wellbeing of its people, promoted through active listening, social dialogue and the fostering of safe, inclusive and development‑oriented working environments. On the other hand, social investment in local communities, through support for initiatives that contribute to improving living conditionsjob creationskills development and training programmes, as well as backing community and social projects aligned with the specific needs of each local context.

This approach enables Gonvarri Industries to integrate social action into its industrial activity, strengthening trust‑based relationships with its stakeholders and ensuring a positive and sustainable contribution to the communities in which it operates.
