ESG Impacts

Gonvarri’s Positioning

We seek to support our partners to accelerate their decarbonization transformation and make their sustainability progress visible.

What is so-called Green Steel?

Green steel is steel produced using methods that significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional steel production, often incorporating renewable energy sources and innovative technologies.

What technologies are required?

Sustainable methods include the use of natural gas in the first instance and hydrogen thereafter instead of coal in the reduction process, electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy, recycling of steel scrap, and carbon capture and storage technologies.

How does green steel contribute to sustainability?

It reduces the carbon footprint of steel production, minimizes environmental pollution and promotes recycling.

Carbon neutral

For Gonvarri Industries, being a low-carbon company implies being part of an important commitment to climate change, assuming a series of actions that promote and contribute to mitigating our impact. We have therefore defined and approved the ‘Carbon Neutral Plan 2030/50’ and incorporated it into the company’s decision-making, business strategy, management and performance.

Our 2030 target, across all geographies and markets, is to:

Reduce emissions associated with fossil fuel consumption by 50% (base year 2022).
100% of the electricity consumed by the company to come from renewable sources.

Consult annually, through our public information reports, the monitoring of the evolution of the Carbon Neutral Plan.

Strategic Plan 2022-2024:

8% reduction in emissions Scope 1.
58% of electricity from renewable sources.

Energy consumption from renewable sources

The Carbon Neutral 2030/2050 Plan sets a target of 2 = 0 emissions by 2030. This target refers to emissions from energy purchased by the company, i.e. electricity and steam/heat. At the end of 2023, electricity consumption is 68% from renewable sources.

CO2 emissions

The strong value that Gonvarri places on its commitment to sustainability and the environment means that the company is constantly seeking and investing in the most efficient solutions and technologies for its processes that will enable it to reduce its energy consumption and CO2 emissions as much as possible.

68%

Electricity consumption from renewable sources

Waste management

A total of 358 kt was produced in 2023. Scrap metal accounts for 98% and the remaining 2% consists mainly of plastic packaging, cardboard, tablex, wood waste, organic and construction and demolition waste. Around 99% of non-hazardous waste is recyclable (steel, aluminum, wood, paper, recyclable plastic and construction materials).

Circular economy

In 2023, the estimated % of recycled material in Gonvarri Industries' purchases was 22%.

We prioritize people

In 2024, the company has promoted 7 positive social impact projects at the corporate level, with more than 100,000 beneficiaries. The total investment in these projects amounted to 367,000 euros, with the collaboration of 7 counterparts.
