Solar Steel delivers 500Mw of its RackSmarT® fixed structure to Europe’s largest photovoltaic farm

Solar Steel, a division of Gonvarri Steel Services, has begun supplying its RackSmarT® fixed solar structure to the Nuñez de Balboa project, which will become the largest photovoltaic solar plant built to date in Europe.

The project, located in the municipality of Usagre (Badajoz) and owned by the IBERDROLA group, will have a peak installed capacity of 500MW and will supply clean energy to around 250,000 people, more than the combined population of the cities of Cáceres and Badajoz.

A total of 1,430,000 photovoltaic modules will be installed on the structures supplied by Solar Steel for the Núñez de Balboa project, which will produce around 832 GWh per year, avoiding the emission of 250,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. The electricity produced will be evacuated to the 400 kV Bienvenida substation, located in the municipality of the same name.

Gonvarri Steel Services is committed to the ecological transition, promoting green energies like its client (Iberdrola Renovables) and involving local industry. Thus, the new photovoltaic plant will generate more than 1,000 jobs during its construction and will involve local companies.

For its part, Gonvarri Steel Services will manufacture most of the structures for this project at HIASA, the group’s plant located in Cancienes, Asturias. The plant, which employs around 400 people, was founded in 1972 and is located 8 km from the port of Avilés and 21 km from the port of Gijón. Its industrial and driving activity in the area has made it a benchmark in the transformation of steel in Asturias and one of the companies that has generated the most employment in the region.
